Lusaka, 7th June 2021: The productive capacity of any economy and the wellbeing of its people largely depends on the quality of health prevalent in a country which is determined by health systems and structures. In this regard, Government spending on health is critical for reducing health inequalities and improving the social determinants of health that in turn improve the social and economic status of the population. While the deterioration of the Zambian macroeconomic environment- partly due to a rising debt problem and the covid-19 pandemic, has made it challenging to mobilize and allocate resources to adequately support social sectors, it is important that the health sector of the country is not compromised due to insufficient spending as this will have long term effects on the people as well as on the economy as a whole.
